About the Center

History

The research center dates back to when a seismological observatory was established in Inuyama, Aichi in 1965. The facility was expanded with earthquake and volcanic eruption prediction projects, which led to the establishment of the Research Center for Seismology and Volcanology in 1999. At the time, the Center belonged to the School of Science, but in April 2002, the Graduate School of Environmental Studies took over. The research center operates observation stations for earthquakes and crustal movement in the Chubu region and jointly conducts research on the prediction of earthquake occurrence and volcanic eruptions with research institutes around the nation. In April 2003, the field of regional disaster reduction was added and it became the Research Center for Seismology, Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation. In January 2012, the field of regional disaster reduction developed into the Disaster Mitigation Research Center, and the Center was renamed the Earthquake and Volcano Research Center.
